One of the most important things that I hope to provide to my clients is the ability to press pause on life, if only for a moment. A documentary family session can help you remember the rituals, routines and traditions that are important for you and your family. Perhaps you and your family make pancakes every Sunday morning and then have a leisurely brunch or perhaps you visit the farmers’ market every Saturday during the summer. Maybe the weeknight routine of dinner, bath and bed with little kids is a definitive one for your family or maybe it’s your weekend hike or paddle that feels most important to remember. Whatever the case, documentary family photography can help you remember all the details of these day-to-day routines and preserve their emotive component for years to come.
And so I was really excited when this family chose to have me do their documentary family session on a weekday evening in order to capture their family tradition of eating dinner and playing cards. I joined them when everyone was arriving home from work and school and photographed their fun and relaxed evening of time together. They spent some time hanging out in the front yard (and were joined by some neighbors), cooked a little dinner, played cards and ate together. It was such a beautifully fun evening and I feel so privileged to have been able to witness and capture this little slice of their life. I hope that these are the moments that they will treasure and remember in the future and that these photos will help them do so. What traditions would you commemorate in your documentary family session? Get in touch and we can chat all about it! In the meantime, enjoy this wonderful peek into this sweet family tradition.
