I’m about a month and a half into my two 2018 photo projects (one photo per day including a weekly self-portrait). After finishing my last 365 last February, getting back into the habit of photographing my life on a daily basis rough. I found myself leaving the photo taking to the end of the day and then simply running out of energy to compose a decent shot. I had forgotten how annoying I sometimes find it to bring my camera with me on outings with the kids, especially when toting around all of the other necessities for their care as well. And the reasons for tackling these projects were not as clear to me while shooting as they had been on January 1st. What was I hoping to capture in all these pictures and to what end? Did it matter if the tiny details that I sometimes focus on really only seem to have emotional resonance for me? Was the point of all this just to keep practicing and experimenting? And really, who is the audience for all this? I thought a lot about all this as I worked through January and I think I’m finding my way to an answer as February nears its midpoint and the habit of daily shooting is again becoming more natural, more joyful and more meaningful. And with that here are a selection of my favorite photos from the life of my family from January 2018.
