Any time a family trusts me to photograph them, I feel honored. A family’s choice to invite me into their life and to capture the important moments in their shared story is one that makes me remember that my role in their day is not just to get some cute shots to send to friends and family or to share on social media, but to help them freeze this moment in time and to preserve it. When this lovely family asked me to photograph their morning at home celebrating the birthday of their younger son after having photographed him as a tiny newborn a year earlier, I felt the full joy and appreciation of the trust they were placing in me. These Madison documentary family photos chronicle a quiet, yet ever-so-important morning at home as mom, dad, big brother and the birthday boy talked, played, laughed and also ate some mid-morning cake. It was such a wonderful few hours and I feel so pleased to have been able to visit their home one year later after my first visit and to see how much their boys had grown and how life has progressed and blossomed for this foursome. Happy first birthday!
