Winter at Catherine Hilcove Photography

Thanksgiving is upon us and here in Madison we’ve had our first real snowfall of the season, so I feel pretty confident in saying that winter has arrived. We’re hunkering down for the cold months to come and, if we’re being honest, steeling ourselves a bit for making it through these next few months with as much kindness, joy, patience and grace as possible.

A few months ago I started thinking about what the winter months would look like for my business. I envisioned being able to carefully do a few in-home sessions and hopefully doing some work outside. I even thought I might be able to do some newborn sessions indoors with the proper precautions. But as I’ve watched COVID infection rates, hospitalizations and deaths in Wisconsin soar ever higher over the past few months, I understand quite clearly that sticking to those winter plans I had imagined would be both unsafe and irresponsible now.

So, what’s the plan? Keep on reading for all the details…

Embracing That Midwestern Cold…

One part of my own family’s plan to get through the winter is to really try and embrace outdoor winter activities this year. We need to get out of our house, see other people and move our bodies to stay mentally healthy and the safest option to accomplish all that is to put on all our winter gear and get ready for a lot of cold weather outdoor adventures.

And that’s exactly the same approach I’ll be taking with my business during these coming months of colder temperatures. Just because we can’t do winter like we normally would, doesn’t mean that winter won’t be happening. And just because I can’t photograph you and your family being your amazing selves in your home, it certainly doesn’t mean I can’t photograph you being awesome outside!

My challenge to you: join me in really going for it this winter!

Life will not stop over these next several months. Your kids will keep growing and changing, you will get creative and find ways to make the sameness of your days feel exciting and you will find things to smile and laugh about even when the world around us feels darker than usual. And just like you want to remember life when everything feels pretty good, let’s also remember the beauty of life when things are harder. Because I promise you, it’s still there just waiting to be found.

So I’m inviting you to join me for an outdoor winter adventure session in the coming months! Let’s put on our layers of winter clothing and head outside. I’ll photograph your steaming breath, your children’s noses red from the cold, the stark beauty of the outdoors in winter and the exuberant beauty of you and your family living your lives to the fullest you can right now.

All the fine print:

  • Because you can never count on the weather forecast, winter adventure sessions will have flexible rescheduling options to make sure that your time outside is as fun (and comfortable!) as possible.
  • There is no wrong activity for our time together! Does your family love to ski? Go sledding? Ice skate? Hike? Whatever your winter activity of choice, I’m ready for the adventure. Let’s photograph your family’s special brand of winter fun!
  • Not sure how to plan your winter adventure session? Just get in touch so we can come up with an amazing plan that’s perfect for your family.

P.S. If you picked up on my “30 Rock” super-fan reference in this post title, we clearly need to get together and chat about all things Liz Lemon!
