In October, I had the wonderful opportunity to host a fundraiser for Madison Area Parent Support (MAPS), a local nonprofit that supports parents during the postpartum period and beyond. As a mother and a photographer I find that my life is full of pictures of my kids on their own and pictures of my kids with my husband, with extended family and with their friends. I, however, do not make as regular an appearance in those photos as I would like. It’s a problem that I’ve been working to solve in my own life, but it was also the impetus for the creation of this project.
For this fundraiser I wanted the get moms in the frame with their children, laughing, snuggling and smiling all together while someone else took charge of capturing that moment. I wanted to give the caretaker who is so often behind the camera documenting life the chance to be a part of that visual story, and to encourage moms to take the time to commemorate their current moment of motherhood. And it turned out to be a wonderful day of doing just that. I had the wonderful pleasure of capturing all the love and joy you see in these photos and of supporting an awesome local organization at the same time. It was an experience that I know I will treasure and that I hope I’ll have an opportunity to repeat again the future.
